This is a picture of an old fashioned café.

To get to this picture I first clicked on the link that said Photographs of Signs Enforcing Racial Discrimination: Documentation by Farm Security Administration-Office of War Information. I then clicked on picture #19 on that page to get to the picture above. This picture was taken outside of a café. It is hard to tell whether it was light or dark outside because of the glass on the building and the way the photo was taken. This is a very urban building because it uses new technology to serve food to customers. I am not entirely sure what time of day it is but I would say it was daytime because of the light on the building on the reflection of the café. In the picture I can only see two waiters serving people in the store. They are both wearing white dress shirts and black dress pants. One of them is carrying food to a customer as the other is most likely going to give the order to the cook. Both waiters are white as are anyone who would enter that building because it says on the door “White.” A fact that caught my eye first and is very distinguishing is the fact that a hamburger is 5 cents. Now you’re lucky if you can get a good burger for 5-10 dollars. Although, you can find fast food restaurants that serve greasy burgers for a dollar which are everywhere now. This building looks like it gets a lot of business because it is so nice and clean. It isn’t beaten down at all and is kept in good condition with most likely the money they receive from their customers. The café looks very small from the outside which I’m guessing it is because they really weren’t that large back then. This is a very Heavy picture because a lot is going on. You have servers, hamburgers for 5 cents, a white only sign and many hungry customers. This is a very positive picture during this time. The big business shows that families around there weren’t struggling as much as other families around the country. This picture is very cheerful as waiters run around filling orders and peoples stomachs. This business shows how little the people in the town is affected by the Great Depression which is good unlike many other families in the US. If I had to ask a question to the photographer I would ask “ is business at that restaurant as good as It looks?” also, I would ask was there a café like the one in the picture that was meant only for colored people?” So I could know how diverse that town was between race and color.

An old colored theatre.

To get to this picture I clicked on the required link Photographs of Signs Enforcing Racial Discrimination: Documentation by Farm Security Administration-Office of War Information. Then I clicked on the 23 picture on the page to get to the photo of this old colored theatre. This picture was takn outdoors of an old theatre. It looks to be very light out and most likely mid-day. This is a very urban picture. There is not farm life on the photo and it looks to be more modern. The seem to be no people in the picture. It is just a thaetre. One thing that caught my eyes first is the fact that it was meant for colored people. Also, it is very beaten down and not cared well for. This is a business but i doesnt look like it is doing too well and barelly getting any customers. The only thing i can see surrounding this structure is an energy company right next door that looks to be closed at that moment. This building is in a tight strip of buildings. This is a very dark picture because it shows how unfairly black people were treated at that time. That also makes it negative because people of a different race of color could not onverse and be with one another without it being against the law. In another way this picture is light because it is a bright and sunny day on the theatre. This picture overall shows the horrible racism back then. Now people of any race, color or ethnicity can converse in the same place. Back then it was illegal and people were arrested and it was usually the black folk because everyone blamed them during that time. One question i would ask the photographer is were the people then appauled by the racism of the theatre or have they learned to deal with it? Also, i would ask the author when did this theatre stop just letting black people in and allowed both races.

The inside of an old pub.

To get to this page I clicked on the link Photographs of Signs Enforcing Racial Discrimination: Documentation by Farm Security Administration-Office of War Informationthen i clicked on photo # 28. This picture was taken indoors of an old pashioned what i think is a pub. I think this building uses dim light because it is kindof dark and kind of bright. This picture is a little rural and a little urban. Pubs our usually old and outdoorsy and it is urban because it uses new technology to serve the costomers. Because the picture is not outdoors i cant tell is it is night or day but because it is a pub that server beer it must be past 5:00. There are no people in the picture but what catches my eyes first is the sign in the middle that says "Positivly, No beer served to Indians." This business looks like it is kept very nice and clean with what money they have. Because it is just a picture of a wall in a pub, there is no spacing or anything surrounding the building that can be seen
. This is a dark picture because it shows that racism doesnt just affect the African American race but all ethnicities which also makes this photo dark as well. This picture also ligt because of the lighting in the picture that makes it very bright. This only proves how bad racism was during the Great Depression. All ethinicities suffered from the stupidity of man during then. A question i would ask the photographer is how good was business for the pub? so i knew how bad people were doing oin that area during the time of the Depression. Another question I would ask is were there many racism protests in that town to fight racism towards freedom?
